Music has the power to do the incredible. It can embody all of your hurt and pain. It can express love and emotion in ways you’ve never dreamt of. It can save your life more times than you can count. It can make you feel alive. It helps you to remember the ones we’ve lost. It can get you pumped. It’s used in wars and weddings. Music has no boundaries, no end. Many things may fade but music is one of the constants, evolving and changing as life moves on.
Oh, I don’t know what you’ve been told
But this girl right here’s gonna rule the world
Yeah, that is where I’m gonna be because I wanna be
No, I don’t wanna sit still, look pretty”
–Daya, “Sit Still, Look Pretty“
My favorite songs are the ones that hold meaning. Ones that bring you back to a moment in time or a memory. I’m a quote person so the type of songs that stick with me are those that have the one part that I can make a personal connection with.
Here are a few of my favorites!
“Simple Things” – Miguel
This song has gained A LOT of speed over the past few years but the first time I heard this song was on a little HBO show called GIRLS (which is the vision I linked because his album version is slightly different). It’s basically impossible for me to forget this song! It was the ending song to one of my favorite episodes (S3.E8). In the episode, Adam Sackler (Adam Driver), the love interest of one of the main characters Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham), gave us one of his most memorable quotes:
Just because I tasted her cum and spit or could tell you her middle name or knew a record she liked, that doesn’t mean anything. That’s NOT a connection. Anyone can have that. REALLY knowing someone is something else. It’s a completely different thing and when it happens you won‘t be able to miss it.”
“Simple Things” talks about just that, the simple things, like how easy and simple love can be. You don’t need all this fancy foo-foo-ness to make love work and make love last. We put so much pressure on our relationships. They have to bigger and better and more perfect than anyone else’s. No they don’t. The point of any relationship is to have a deeper connection with someone that’s not like any other connection with any other person in the entire world. We shouldn’t make it anymore complicated than that…
I don’t want a model.
I don’t want a movie star.
You don’t have to win the lotto, oh.
I want you to win my heart, yeah.
She said I just want someone true.
She said I just want someone to smoke with me babe
And lay with me babe
And laugh with me babe…
‘Cause I just want the simple things.
And I just want you.”
“Best For Last” – Adele
Adele is known for her angelic ballads of love and pain. That’s exactly why we love her so much on top of the fact she’s a complete badass away from the mic. “19” is the very first album she released with the popular hit “Chasing Pavements” and her amazing rendition of “Make You Feel My Love”.
This song has the classic Adele feel of love and betrayal. If you look at just the chorus you’d think this was the sweetest love song in the world.
I make you feel the way you’ve never felt before
And I’m all you need and that you never want more
Then you’d say all of the right things without a clue
But you’d save the best for last
Like I’m the one for you”
But as you get into the song you realize it’s something much, much different.
Seems I love the things you do
Like the meaner you treat me the more eager I am
To persist with this heartbreak and running around”
Adele talks about being with the perfect man that just so happens to “belong” to someone else. We’ve all wanted something (or someone) that we just couldn’t have and the harder we fight, the harder it is to let it go. We’re finally pushed to the point of “should I stay or should I go?” Is it worth the pain or do I get out while I’m ahead?
“Sweet Life” – Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean has been kind of non-existent over the past 5ish years with the exception of “Blonde”, which he released last year (don’t really know how I feel about it). “Channel Orange” was such an amazing album. It had so much diversity! The biggest hits were “Thinkin Bout You”, “Pyramids” and “Super Rich Kids” (which was featured in “The Bling Ring” in 2013).
“Sweet Life” is one of those that sort of sneaks up on you like, “Damn! This is a GREAT song!” In this song, Frank talks about a girl that has all the finer things in life but yet still wants more. His question to her is “Why see the world when you got the beach?” Why want more when you already have everything? Why long for the things you don’t have instead of appreciating what you do have? Why want more when you already have the “Sweet Life”?
You’ve had a landscaper and a house keeper since you were born
The sunshine always kept you warm
So why see the world, when you got the beach
Don’t know why see the world, when you got the beach
The sweet life“
“Wake Me Up” – Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran. Is. My. BOY! From “+ (Plus)” to “x (Multiply)” or his latest album “÷(Divide)”, there hasn’t been one song I didn’t like. If I love you from the beginning I will love you till the end! I mean I love the guy so much I used “Thinking Out Loud” as a wedding song (which is the song that won him his first two grammies – FINALLY!!)!
I wanted to take it back to the beginning when I first fell for Ed. “+ (Plus)” brought us “The A Team” and “Lego House”. When I first heard “Wake Me Up” I was like, “HOLY SHIT! Ed woke this song about me!” I’ve never heard any other song that described me to-a-t!
It’s just wonderful and beautiful and amazing….
‘Cause maybe you’re lovable
And maybe you’re my snowflake
And your eyes turn from green to gray and in the winter I’ll
Hold you in a cold place”
“All We Are” – OneRepublic
OneRepublic is another one of those that I’ve loved from the beginning. And, of course, I’ll never forget the first time I heard one of their biggest hits (and the song that put them on the map) “Apologize”. I was watching American’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) on MTV and the JabbaWockeeZ were preforming to it (btw…they won Season 1 in 2008 and were the first dace group to headline their own Las Vegas show). The mixture of music and dance has always entranced me and from that moment I was hooked to both OneRepublic and the JabbaWockeeZ!
This song is from their first album “Dreaming Out Loud”. It takes me all the way back to high school. I so desperately wanted this song to be our class song. I was out voted because no one had heard of the song or the group (typical haha) but I did get in the class video we did at the end of graduation.
The song is about breaking up with someone that you don’t really want to breakup with but you know you have to because it will be the best for the both of you. A lot like high school in the fact that it’s comfortable and you know the way around that world. Unfortunately we all eventually have to leave and grow up to pursue other things in life. This reminds you that even though it’s ending the pain and sadness won’t last forever.
We won’t say our goodbyes
You know it’s better that way
We won’t break, we won’t die
It’s just a moment of change“
Fun Fact: Ryan Tedder (lead singer/song writer) not only writes songs for his band but he’s also cranked out hits for Adele, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and Queen-B herself, Beyoncé, just to name a few.
“All I Wanted” – Paramore
Ah Paramore, you are my everything. This is the song that caused me to fall in love with Paramore and the one and only Hayley Williams.
Warning: this song is kind of on the depressing side but it reminds me of my mom. If I knew that I was going to lose her at some a young I would have done so many things different. I would have found out everything there was to know about her. I would have just been around her, soaking up her amazing energy. I would have tried harder to memorize everything thing I could about her.
This song is about a breakup that Hayley (or whoever the song was written about) didn’t want to happen. That if she knew that it was just going to end she may have done thing differently or would’ve “slow(ed) down at all of our favorite parts”. We take for granted the things we have been graciously given until we don’t have them anymore.
That scream…it will give you goosebumps. I get them every time.
I could follow you to the beginning
Just to relive the start
Maybe then we’d remember to slow down
At all of our favorite parts
All I wanted was you”
Fun Fact: Hayley and I have the same birthday which makes her my spirit animal.
“Smooth” – Santana ft. Rob Thomas (Matchbox 20)
Now this song doesn’t necessarily have a special meaning me to pursue. It just so happens to have been one of my mom’s favorite songs. She LOVED this song! Every time it came on in the car she’d cranked it up and dance around as much as the seat belt would allow her! This song makes me happy and brings me back to those car rides. When this song comes on out of the blue, I crank it up and have a little dance party for my mom 🙂
And if you said, ‘This life ain’t good enough.’
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
Because you’re so smooth
And it’s just like the ocean under the moon
Well, that’s the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kind of loving that can be so smooth, yeah.
Gimme your heart, make it real
Or else forget about it”
The biggest take away I’d say would be to enjoy what you have. I’m not saying don’t NOT aspire for greatest, just be appreciative of what you have before, in between and after “the greatness”. You never know when it will fade away.
